What is not said at the table
T
here are specific rules at the table, not only in the ways but also in the words, sentences to say. The moment of the table is the right moment to understand how much a person has been educated for a social life. Even in the oldest book we have, The Holy Bible, exactly in the book of Sirach, there are two whole chapters dedicated to the good advice that the father gives to his son on behavior in society and during banquets. Hospitality in the home is one of the most ancient arts, as taught by the Greeks who even considered it sacred.
Few rules are needed to avoid being considered rude:
- Never say “Buon Appetito”; frequently used but absolutely banned from good etiquette. In the event that we have to respond, it is better to say “thank you” and not with another “good appetite” or with “equally”.
- Never say “Cin Cin” during the toast in a gesture of joy; you just have to raise the glass to face height towards the birthday boy and accompany him with a beautiful smile; I recommend, no clink of glass!
- All crude expressions are banned at the table as “disgusting”, “I don’t like it”, and all those arguments that are not suited to a meal such as diseases, accidents and, above all, never speak of the physiological functions of the body.
- We do not continually thank the waiter when he serves us at the table, but when we ask for something outside of the food and he does us a courtesy, such as, for example, pointing out the toilet.
- There is no mention of money, politics and topics that inevitably turn on the spirits; a good landlord knows how to bring the discussion back to something lighter and less engaging.
- You do not ask for salt because it means that the dish has not been cooked optimally and therefore you can offend the landlord.
It is true that Bon Ton imposes all these rules on us; but it is true that it is enough to always apply, in any situation, the rule of good taste and common sense (cum grain salis).
